It?s hard to believe that it?s been almost a week since my return from Portugal. During my study abroad, I was immersed in the Portuguesel culture and ways of life, and it was one of the best experiences that I?ve been able to have during my time in undergrad.
During our second week in Portugal, we stayed in the city of Porto. Porto has more of a suburbia and relaxed vibe in contrast to Lisboa, and I fell in love with Porto upon arriving. During our stay, we visited one of the biggest wineries, a cork production facility, and a textile company known for underwear and sportswear. One similar pattern I saw throughout all the businesses were in regards to sustainability and maximum use of the environment. Many businesses in Europe take into account the environment and all the surrounding energy as means for production and efficiency. At the winery, 80% of their energy comes from the sun, and the textile company ensures that all materials are sustainable and unused parts are recycled. It was really refreshing to see them take advantage of a circular economy, and maximize their productivity while keeping the environment in mind.
In addition to the company visits, I began to feel more acclimated with the environment and culture of Portugal. I was able to make a little bit of small talk with store owners and restaurant workers, and felt more confident saying phrases like ?Bom Dia ? (Good Morning) and ?Obrigado? (Thank You). Also, exploring the various cities like Guimares and Aviero made me appreciate the culture more and further cemented that the quality of life in other countries is very good.
Overall, I am very glad that I had this experience and I wouldn?t trade it for the world. I feel more aware about international business, and have loved getting an international perspective in all different aspects of life. Not only that, I?ve made a lifetime of memories and have a new group of close friends that made study abroad feel like 2 days. I recommend a study abroad program to anyone who has the slightest desire to go, and will forever cherish this opportunity.
