I?m ending my Costa Rica trip with a refreshed perspective on what life and business can look like.
I think it is really neat to see how many companies here do not compromise their values for the monetary success of their businesses. In Costa Rica, nature and the environment are highly valued, following their ?without nature, we are nothing? mantra. I noticed the emphasis on nature initially but wondered if perhaps I was just getting a clouded tourist view. My initial impressions were correct. Special biodegradable packaging, philanthropic efforts for environmental causes, and sustainable business practices are all common examples of ways Costa Ricans conduct business. The country is beautiful, and the locals truly work to keep it that way.
The most impactful part of the trip for me was living with a host family. Getting integrated into their culture and learning about their lives in simple, everyday moments is something that could not be replicated in a classroom. Also, after living there and spending two weeks surrounded by the Spanish language, the idea of learning a new language feels much more attainable. I feel inspired to learn more!
The idea of entrepreneurship and starting something new also feels much more attainable. I am motivated by so many people who have taken an idea or a passion and turned it into something successful. During our company visits, it was consistently mentioned that it is difficult to start a company in Costa Rica. The persistence and patience of the individuals we spoke to on this trip were evident. It made many of the students in our group think about how we could take our own passions and interests to create a successful business in the future.
I am immensely grateful for my time abroad. Each company visit and cultural experience taught me something unique. Even if I continue to participate in business only in the United States, I am reminded of how globally we are connected. The lessons and insights these companies provided will help me in my future ventures, no matter what path I take. Building relationships with clients, creating a personalized experience, being open to diverse investments and opportunities, and using your passion to drive a business mission are all incredibly applicable lessons I learned.
Visiting Costa Rica reminded me of how truly big the world is. There is so much to explore and so much to learn from others. Pura Vida!!!
