During my semester exchange in Madrid, my perspective on the world changed. I went in expecting an academic experience with some business classes, a bit of adventure exploring a new city, and some cool stories to tell. But what I got was so much more.
The reality of my experience exceeded my expectations in ways I hadn’t imagined. Attending school in Madrid provided me with a unique academic perspective. The business classes I took were taught with a global context, emphasizing the interconnectedness of economies and the importance of cultural awareness in business practices. This broadened my understanding of global markets and international business strategies.
Traveling around Spain and other parts of Europe further enriched my experience. I had the opportunity to visit countless cities in 7 countries over 2 continents, experience diverse cultures, and witness firsthand the beauty and complexity of different regions. Each place I visited offered new insights and challenged my preconceived notions about the world and question everything I knew about myself.
One of the most impactful aspects of my time in Madrid was the people I met. I forged friendships with fellow students from all over the world. These connections exposed me to a variety of perspectives and life experiences, creating a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. Conversations with my 11 roommates and fellow classmates often extended beyond academics, touching on global issues, personal aspirations, and cultural traditions. These interactions helped me develop a more nuanced understanding of the world and the people in it.
Everyone says that traveling the world and meeting new people changes your life and I believed it. However, I didn’t expect the extent or the ways it affected me. It’s something that can’t be fully comprehended by anyone who hasn’t experienced it and even sometimes by those who have. I can’t wait to go back!
