Our time in Spain on this study abroad has been different beyond just the culture shock. Not only is it my first time in Europe, but going back to having to wear a mask often has been different as well. It has been interesting to see how differently Covid is treated over here, just like the countless other ways the Spanish differ from Americans. One of the biggest differences is transportation. The metro takes us almost anywhere in the city, but even then we walk so much more than what I?m used to back home. Another major change is the meals. The food here is a different style than I?m used to, and it all tastes amazing. However, one of the main differences is the service. In Spain, a meal is much more of an event, and because the server also does not work for tips, it happens at a very slow pace. I was surprised at how few people speak English here, and at how difficult this has been. I don?t know Spanish, but growing up in Texas I thought I would at least have enough to help out more than it has. It can be a struggle at times to do simple tasks such as order at a restaurant or ask for directions. Despite this, I have quickly come to love Barcelona in just the few days I?ve been here. The city is beautiful, and it?s fascinating to not only learn about Spain but actually see the culture and lifestyle firsthand. I have loved this study abroad so far, and can?t wait for the next few weeks as well.
