After an exhilarating two-week excursion in Singapore, I can confidently declare it among the most exceptional countries I’ve ever explored. The rich tapestry of cuisine, vibrant culture, societal intricacies, and the unwavering discipline woven into the lives of Singaporeans make it truly unparalleled. Not to mention, the immaculate cleanliness that pervades the city, a testament to the admirable commitment of its citizens to fostering harmony and peace.
As a Chinese-American, my preconceptions about Singapore and its business landscape were challenged during the Mays Faculty-Led Program. The experience surpassed my expectations, revealing a society that extends its friendliness and compassion not only on the bustling streets but also within the dynamic realms of business. The warmth and openness of Singaporeans towards foreigners left me pleasantly surprised, reshaping my perspective on both the cultural and business aspects of this remarkable nation.
Participating in the Business Study Abroad program offered unique opportunities for exploration, with multiple company visits to Halliburton, ExxonMobil, Maybank, ESSEC, The US Embassy, S&P Global, and an A&M Business Dinner. These engagements provided valuable insights into the intricacies of business practices in Singapore, shedding light on the significant influence of culture on their approach. Notably, Singaporean business professionals exhibit a direct and efficient communication style, contributing to streamlined operations.
This journey not only enriched my understanding of Singapore’s business landscape but also significantly expanded my business network, particularly among fellow Aggies. The vastness of the Aggie network worldwide became evident, with each business generously sharing insights into their practices and encouraging questions. This facilitated a deeper understanding of Singaporean business methods in comparison to the American approach, fostering a more comprehensive view of global business dynamics.
In conclusion, this trip to Singapore not only broadened my cultural horizons but also fostered lasting connections and insights. I definitely want to return back to Singapore in the near future. Last but certainly not least, I want to express my eternal gratitude towards CIBS, Texas A&M University and Dr. Lane for orchestrating this enriching experience. Additionally, I would love to thank Sharon and Irman from Global Academic Ventures for being our personal tour guides and providing Texas A&M with the knowledge to successfully take on a 2-week trip in Singapore.
