Excited for my study abroad adventure, my journey began with initial impressions of Europe, particularly in Athens. My thrill at exploring this vibrant city was heightened by the unexpected discoveries and contrasts with my home country.
My initial impressions of Europe were mainly centered on the astonishing English proficiency among the people I interacted with. Nearly every person not only understood and spoke English fluently but also grasped slang expressions like “on the house.” This experience led me to reconsider my limited knowledge of other languages and reflect on the widespread bilingualism in the world, highlighting a contrast with the emphasis on language learning in America.
Regarding the physical landscape, a striking observation was the cleanliness evident throughout, particularly in public transportation. Unlike some U.S. cities where public transit areas can be less than ideal, here in Europe, the absence of trash in metro loading areas and on public transportation made me feel safe and impressed. On a different note, the widespread acceptance and promotion of cigarette smoking, encountered from the airport to public spaces, stood out, although the initially nauseating smell has become somewhat more tolerable over time.
Concerns about maintaining a gluten-free diet added another layer to my experience. While initial impressions at the airport were positive, with gluten-free options available, navigating gluten-free choices in Athens proved challenging. Many local meats contained gluten, and awareness of gluten-free alternatives, like pizza or pasta, was limited. Anticipating a more accommodating experience in Italy, I look forward to seeing how my perspective evolves by the end of the trip.
Overall, as a first-time traveler outside the U.S., I am captivated by the beauty Europe has already offered. The cleanliness, language proficiency, and cultural nuances provide a unique lens through which to view this part of the world. I eagerly anticipate the unfolding experiences and adventures that lie ahead on this incredible journey, which has already broadened my perspective in ways I hadn’t imagined.
