I have learned an incredible amount from studying abroad in Barcelona both intellectually and personally.?
As to intellectual development, I have gained an immense amount of knowledge regarding the European Union and international business generally. Maria?s class has provided a basis in economics that has left me competent and ready to have informed conversations about the European Union and general economics. I am a more well-rounded student having taken this course. International business with Professor Panina has also proven incredibly interesting; her engaging stories have allowed me to retain core concepts about culture and gain a more global perspective. I am better equipped to interact with business people across the globe. Company visits have proven integral as well, making concepts we have learned about in international business regarding business styles and priorities far more tangible. There is no experience like going on an in-person tour. It allows for the creation of personal connections and the tangible application of concepts discussed in class.
As to personal growth, I have learned so much about myself during this study abroad. The courses and cultural experiences removed me from the bubble that is Mays Business School in College Station, Texas. I interacted with a broad base of fascinating individuals. Each experience meeting another individual allowed me to realize how diverse our world truly is. As to Spanish culture specifically, the emphasis on work-life balance was incredibly evident. Where Americans become hyper-fixated on salary and hours and competency, the Spanish love their holidays and siesta. The pace of life is completely different. Beyond this, I was pushed to think critically about my opinions regarding differences between the US and European countries.
This study abroad has been an experience I will absolutely never forget. I will take what I have learned with me as a part of who I am becoming.
