Howdy! My name is Tori Garza and I have just completed my first year in Mays Business at Texas A&M. My experience in the International to Research Abroad Program (IRAP)?was nothing short of exceptional. I sit here writing this blog on my last day simply not able to believe, or at least not wanting to believe, that my time in the Yucat?n?is coming to an end. I first want to acknowledge and recognize the incredible framework and organization of this program. It truly was such a blessing to have this experience and I am beyond grateful for everything I have gained from this program. Moreover, I am extremely proud to have been the first of many Mays students to participate in this research.
In all honesty, my initial reaction to the application email was one of hesitation. I am not a fan of science in the slightest. You might be asking, “if that is the case, why would you go on a RESEARCH trip?” This question was emulated in my mind as well. Yet, my response to this question was very clear. To grow, you MUST be uncomfortable. What better way to do this than to place me in a situation and venture on this unordinary journey. I can say without a doubt this program has done just that. Although I am a finance major, the technical visits were extremely practical. I constantly found myself learning something new and gaining a new perspective. For example, in our Bloomberg Lab, we analyzed and compared companies’ growth over some time. This lab along with others allowed my business mindset to flourish and I was able to voice my knowledge.
As for the cultural experience of this trip, it was everything and more. In our two weeks, we saw so many beautiful places and indulged in the history of the region. Being of Hispanic descent it brought me true happiness to see my very own history on display in such a magnificent manner. Along with this, the friends I have made from this trip are some of the most well-rounded and caring individuals. I never felt unwelcomed or bored with this group of new friends by my side. I can even go as far as to say, I never got homesick (sorry mom and dad). In all seriousness, I most certainly believe this trip will always have a special place in my heart.
I can not express how thankful I am to all the faculty of Texas A&M and those abroad for making this all happen. Thank you IRAP for allowing me to evolve professionally, immerse myself in another country, and the opportunity to meet amazing people along the way. Gracias and gig’em!
