Tico time: a reference to the laid-back culture and lack of punctuality, making it okay to run a little bit behind.
From the Church of San Jose, 50 Meters to the North and 100 to the East, red house: an example of a valid mailing address, much different from one in the U.S.
The Law of Conservation of Wildlife: a Costa Rican law making it illegal to take pictures of tourists directly interacting with wildlife and discouraging selfies with animals.
Pura Vida: a way of life, also used as a greeting, that encompasses the Costa Rican ?pure life? culture.
These are just a few of the things I?ve already learned during my first week in Costa Rica! I am overwhelmed by the beauty of the country and the measures its citizens take to preserve nature here. So far, we have visited Jaco Beach, taken a Latin dancing class, bought fruit from the local market, visited a chocolate company and a coffee company, gone to a soccer game, met the indigenous community in the area, and so much more.
It has been so neat to learn more about the eco-tourism industry and to see how Costa Rican business owners have taken what they are passionate about and turned it into thriving businesses. A highlight of my week was visiting Sibu Chocolate Company, where we learned more about the history of chocolate and got to try samples. It was so inspiring to hear about the company?s mission and how it drives every aspect of the business. A genuine, relationship-based business strategy (along with amazing-tasting chocolate) is what has brought the company success.
Getting to live with a local host family has allowed me to immerse myself in the culture even more deeply. My host parents have been incredibly welcoming and eager to teach me. I?ve gotten to learn new Spanish phrases, practice speaking the language conversationally, and eat traditional Costa Rican meals. Being integrated into the family?s everyday life has been so unique; we even got to celebrate the homestay daughter?s birthday with a surprise party!
I could not ask for a better trip so far. How special it is to get to experience such a beautiful country with a group of new Aggie friends! I look forward to diving deeper into the Latin culture, learning more of the Spanish language, and building a greater understanding of how nature and the environment shape Costa Rican culture and business.
