I am in awe of Singapore. It is a city of massive scale unlike anything I have ever experienced before. The diversity of its population and variety of architectural styles combined with the nation’s rich history all come together to make up this city of the future. One thing that I believe makes this country so awe-inspiring to me is how different it is from the United States. On the surface, there is an abundance of vegetation spreading throughout the city (due to both the tropical climate and government policies to ensure the maintenance of green zones) that is a far cry from the gray/brown landscape of Texas. But between the towering skyscrapers, the people of Singapore greatly differ from the people of the United States as well .They practice different religions (such as Buddhism) than the majority of the United States. They also eat different foods than we typically do in the United States. During this incredible global experience, I hope to learn more about how various types of businesses individually operate in this different culture. Also, I hope to learn more about how various businesses interact with each other and with the national government to ensure success. Although I wish to learn a great deal about the business environment in Singapore and Asia overall, I also wish to learn more about the unique culture of Singapore. Despite knowing that Singapore is a melting pot of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, and Middle Eastern cultures, I know very little about the intricacies of day-to-day life in Singapore. I wish to be able to go out into the city and experience life like a local does. I hope that I will be able to go to small, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and try some type of food that I?ve never heard of before. I hope that, from this experience, I will not only have a greater understanding of how businesses operate and interact on a global scale, but also have a greater understanding of cultures and beliefs that differ from my own.
