Arriving in Barcelona for the A&M Spain Business Summer Faculty-led Program has already been an exciting mix of learning and adaptation. This city is stunning! Barcelona is full of historic charm, contemporary energy, and a cultural rhythm that feels completely different from what I’m used to in the U.S.
One of the first adjustments has been getting used to the timing of daily life here. Many restaurants and businesses don’t open until 9 or 10 a.m., and meals happen much later, lunch often around 2 p.m., and dinner not until 9 or even 10 p.m. This shift has been both challenging and fascinating, especially as we try to align it with our class schedules and daily routine.
Barcelona has also been dealing with growing concerns about over tourism, and we’ve been encouraged to be mindful guests. Respecting quiet hours, minimizing disruptions in residential areas, and supporting local businesses are small but important ways we can contribute positively while we’re here.
Another noticeable cultural difference is how softly people speak; conversations are generally more reserved in tone than what we’re used to in the U.S., where louder, more energetic speech is common. It’s a reminder that communication styles vary greatly across cultures and that listening more carefully can be just as valuable as speaking.
In our first few days, we’ve also been introduced to elements of Spanish lifestyle beyond the classroom. Locals flock to the beach in the evenings for games of sand volleyball, a favorite pastime here. Activities like these highlight the balance of work, health, and social life that seems to define much of Spanish culture.
As the program begins, I’m eager to deepen my understanding of international business and learn how cultural values shape economic systems. I especially can’t wait for our upcoming company visits and business tours. It will be incredible to see firsthand how Spanish firms operate and how leadership and decision-making differ from U.S. models. I can already tell this experience will broaden not just my global business perspective, but my way of engaging with the world.
