Throughout the course of my study abroad, I learned how to effectively conduct business with Italians. Three other students and I had the privilege of working with a revenue manager from the St. Regis Florence. We had the opportunity to help them create solutions for a unique challenge they presented to us. We were able to get to know the manager and learn about the unique history and culture of the hotel. We learned that conducting business in the hotel and in Italy is very personal. Personal relationships often outweigh professional relationships in Italy. Throughout my time there, I also learned how to slow down and be more patient. Italians live at a more relaxed pace than we do here in America. For instance, meals would take a very long time. This could be irritating at times if I was in a rush, but it was also very nice for enjoying quality time with friends. As is true everywhere, Italians were very friendly and respectful to us when we were respectful to them. I had an amazing time studying in Florence. It definitely changed my perspective. It made me value quality time and enjoy the little things more. I really took in every experience, from walking past the Arno River on my way to class to touring the Colosseum in Rome. I also became more relaxed and stopped worrying about the little things that are out of my control. This experience has also made me want to travel more and explore the world. My initial impressions of Italy were very accurate. Italians live at a much slower pace. They value quality time with friends and family and will choose personal obligations over business ones. The food is of high quality. Most of the food was very fresh and cooked with great attention to detail. I had an amazing experience in Italy, and I am so thankful for all the memories I made!
