Studying abroad in Dubrovnik, Croatia, as part of the Europe Innovation program through Texas A&M University, was my first real taste of working on an international project. The collaboration with the University of Dubrovnik was both exciting and challenging. Initially, I noticed a significant difference between the highly involved culture at Texas A&M and the described “shyness” of students at the University of Dubrovnik. This contrast was striking and made me appreciate the level of engagement we often take for granted back home.
Dubrovnik itself is a city steeped in history, with a slower pace that stands in stark contrast to the fast-paced lifestyle typical in the U.S. The leisurely approach to daily activities, including meals and social interactions, was a refreshing change but required some adjustment. The city’s rich cultural heritage was evident in its architecture, traditions, and the general way of life, which felt more relaxed and community-oriented compared to the often individualistic culture in America.
One of the most significant cultural differences I noticed was the approach to time and urgency. Whether it was waiting for a meal or navigating through the city’s streets, there was a noticeable lack of hurry. This was in stark contrast to the efficiency and speed often expected in the U.S. However, this difference also allowed me to slow down and appreciate the experience in a new light.
