The month I spent studying abroad in Barcelona exceeded all my expectations, teaching me far more than I ever imagined. This program turned every day into an opportunity to learn, making me a student beyond the classroom. I was constantly seeking and absorbing knowledge, whether it was understanding cultural differences, learning how the Port of Barcelona operates, or exploring the functions of the Catalonian Parliament. While knowing the number of cabinet members may not impact my daily life, this incredible experience taught me more about myself than anything I’ve ever done before. Full immersion in Barcelona’s culture gave me a glimpse of what it takes to work as an expatriate. The most important things I learned about myself were my ability to adapt and develop resilience. Forcing myself outside of my comfort zone was challenging at first, but just like anything in life, you get out what you put in. Making the effort to learn about foreign customs and acquire the skills necessary to navigate language barriers was crucial to thriving in a new environment. Additionally, I gained a global perspective that I had not been exposed to before this experience. I found the Catalonian independence movement fascinating. I noticed a clash between the Spaniards who did not associate themselves with this movement and those who did. The government plays a critical role in this dispute due to issues surrounding allocated spending. Beyond social conflict, we explored Spain’s unique approach to work-life balance and social benefits, both of which differ drastically from American culture. Lastly, I gained a new appreciation for my home. I relished every moment of the experience, but as the program drew to a close, I found myself longing for the comfort of home and family. This journey made me deeply aware of the blessings I enjoy daily as a student at the great University of Texas A&M. I strongly encourage anyone who has the opportunity to study abroad to seize it—step outside your comfort zone and become a scholar of the world.
