Looking back on when I first arrived in Barcelona, I never would have imagined I would be where I am now. This past month has truly been an amazing experience. From seeing the Carnival giants in Solsona to walking inside the Sagrada Familia, I have learned much about the culture and traditions that make Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, a vibrant and unique community.
Beyond these iconic experiences, I also immersed myself in everyday aspects of Catalan life. I enjoyed strolls down La Rambla, where street performers and vendors create a lively atmosphere. I tasted traditional dishes and even participated in a cooking workshop. Now, I can bring back a piece of Barcelona and cook Spanish dishes whenever I miss it.
And last but not least, my favorite memory of studying abroad was watching Spain beat England 2-1 and win the Eurocup. Being part of the crowd, cheering as they scored against England, made me feel connected to something larger than myself.
Living abroad has also taught me a great deal about myself and who I want to become. One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is that I can handle myself well under pressure and navigate difficult situations with resilience and confidence. Whether I was finding my way through unfamiliar streets or overcoming the challenges of being far from home, each experience has strengthened my sense of independence and self-reliance. I now realize that a solo travel adventure may be in my future, as the thought of exploring new places on my own excites me and fills me with a sense of freedom.
However, this journey has also made me appreciate the importance of sharing experiences with the people I care about. While I’ve enjoyed the independence and personal growth that come with traveling alone, I’ve found that the most meaningful moments are often those shared with others. Whether it’s exploring a new city or simply watching the sunset, these experiences are enriched by the presence of friends and family. I’ve come to understand that while I value my independence, I also cherish the connections and shared memories from traveling with others.
On another note, an Aggie considering studying abroad in Barcelona will hear a mix of Spanish and Catalan being spoken all around. As well as, street musicians on the metro playing everything from Spanish guitar to modern rap. Visually, they will find themselves surrounded by a blend of medieval, renaissance, and modernist architecture. Beyond the urban landscapes, students will also experience Spain’s natural beauty, from the vineyards of Perlada Winery to the golden beaches of Barcelona and the mountains of Montserrat. Cultural immersion is also a key part of the study abroad experience, such as partaking in the late-night tapas culture, where small plates are shared among friends in a relaxed, social setting.
I would also tell an Aggie considering studying abroad to take the plunge. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that not many others get to experience. You’ll always have the Aggie community to rely on, and you’ll make lifelong friendships that you would’ve never made otherwise.
