I’m excited for the opportunity to study abroad in Dubrovnik, Croatia for the entire month of June through the Europe Innovation Program. I hope to gain more awareness and knowledge about Croatian culture and how it differs from American culture. I also hope to expand my marketing knowledge and enhance my marketing skills from this global experience. I am eager to collaborate with the University of Dubrovnik to create an effective marketing strategy they can utilize for recruiting potential students and to strengthen their international recognition. On the initial arrival of Croatia, I was immediately in awe of the beautiful landscaping, see-through blue water, and the kind Croatian people. We got to visit the University of Dubrovnik’s campus which was very different from Texas A&M’s campus. With about 1,5000 students it is an extremely small campus compared to Texas A&M as D.U. only has a couple buildings. However, University of Dubrovnik’s campus is much prettier than Texas A&M as it oversees the Adriatic sea, filled with greenery and flowers, and is a short walk around from the historic old town. Croatia culture is definitely a lot quieter than U.S. culture, as Croatian individuals are slightly more reserved. One initial impression I had about Croatia was how slow life is compared to the fast, rushed culture in the United States. The waiters at restaurants are a lot slower compared to the customer service in the United States. Going to a Croatian restaurant wasn’t a quick experience, it usually entailed a couple hours of sitting around with your friends and/or family enjoying a long meal filled with laughter and conversation. I enjoyed how Croatian valued community and prized time with family and friends. From my initial impressions, I have already loved being in the calm, slow nature of Croatian culture and cannot wait for more! I am so excited to begin this journey and learn more about what life in Croatia is like!
