The first few days of this program in Panama have given me my first real look at how business and culture operate outside the United States. Spending time in Panama allows me to observe daily life, business practices, and cultural differences in a way that is difficult to understand in only a classroom setting.
One of my first impressions of Panama City is the contrast between modern development and traditional culture. Although the city has an impressive skyline with modern buildings, large companies, and a rapidly growing economy, there is still a strong sense of history and cultural identity reflected in the architecture, local food, and daily routines of the people. The modernization reminds me of large metropolitan cities in the United States. Seeing how these contrasts help me understand how Panama balances economic growth while still maintaining its cultural traditions.
One experience that stands out during our time in the city is visiting Endelis Panamá, an aluminum can manufacturing company. It is really interesting to see the production process up so close and observe how the company manages its workflow. Seeing the manufacturing plant was incredibly cool, and it gave me a better understanding of how businesses in Panama operate and use their local resources and economic conditions.
Another highlight of the first few days is receiving a private tour of the Panama Canal. It was extremely eye-opening to learn about how the canal has highly impacted the country’s economy. Our tour guide explains how ships from all over the world pass through the canal, making it one of the most important trade routes in the global economy. One thing that surprises me is learning about the strict work culture surrounding the canal and the high requirements for the employees who operate it. This contrasts with the slower-paced lifestyle I have noticed in the family interactions and interviews with Global Brigades staff in the city.
As this program continues, I am excited to transition from our time in the city to the next phase of the trip in rural Panama. I look forward to meeting our clients, working alongside them, and experiencing life in a rural community. Lastly, I am excited to utilize my skills from Mays Business School to impact the rural community directly.
