So far, this global business program has been incredible. We are staying in Auckland, New Zealand, and, writing this at the end of our time here, I feel like I have gotten a well-rounded, educational, and fun experience of New Zealand and the Auckland area.
Firstly, the group was able to meet with the US consulate in Auckland and visit a retirement community in the area. I found that hearing from the consulate was fascinating, as they discussed the history, economics, politics, and social environment of New Zealand which was very interesting. In addition, hearing about the business and workings of the retirement community was very insightful.
Then, the group visited the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and the Hobbiton. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds was a cultural experience where we learned about the Māori and the history of the colonization of New Zealand by the British and the creation of the country as we know it today. The Hobbiton experience featured the vast Lord of the Rings set that we toured and got great photos of. Both places we visited on these day trips were immensely beautiful and we really got to see the gorgeous New Zealand scenery.
New Zealand is very similar to the US- I did not feel like I stuck out in many ways at all. It can be even more laid back than the US, however, with businesses taking long breaks over the holidays and many cafes and shops closing in the early afternoon. Additionally, while the US is very diverse, I found that New Zealand is even more diverse- this can be seen in the cuisine- you can find food from almost any culture in Auckland.
Overall, from this global experience, I hope to gain a better understanding of other cultures abroad, observe the different sceneries and ecosystems, and continue to learn more about the business workings on this side of the world.
