My initial impressions of the Global Business Program while in New Zealand have been nothing but positive. This program places a strong emphasis on global awareness and sustainability, which aligns with New Zealand’s national values. Learning about business in a country that prioritizes environmental responsibility and its social well-being has already broadened my perspective on what a successful global business looks like.
The city itself feels welcoming, clean, and well organized. Public transportation is reliable, and people are generally polite, patient, and respectful. Compared to the cities in the U.S., the pace of life feels more balanced, While U.S. often emphasizes speed, productivity, and competition, New Zealand seems to value the quality of life, community, and work life balance. This difference has been noticeable in daily interactions with the community and the locals.
I believe the culture throughout New Zealand has been the most culture shock while on this trip. The Indigenous traditions in New Zealand are visibly honored through the language, art, and public life. Our trip to Waitangi exemplified the Māori traditions and their role in shaping the country to be more aware of how cultural inclusion can strengthen the national identity of New Zealand.
Through this global experience, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of international business practices and how the cultural life is different than back home in the U.S. I also have aimed to improve my adaptability and communication on a global scale. Experiencing firsthand the different cultural values and economic trades from a different country like New Zealand is helping me think more about my future in a professional aspect and also and personal aspect.
Overall, New Zealand has already challenged my assumptions and has encouraged me to see business, culture, and daily life from a broader perspective. I look forward to continuing to explore more as the rest of this trip proceeds.
