Being in Antarctica reshaped how I think about the continent and its place in the world, particularly in relation to global business systems and shared environmental responsibility. Before the trip, Antarctica felt far away and largely removed from the rest of the world, often discussed as a place separate from everyday global systems. Being there made it clear that Antarctica is deeply connected to international networks through research, resource management, and collaboration, and that what happens on the continent has consequences far beyond its shores.
This perspective was reinforced through both our actions on the continent and the learning opportunities onboard. Everyone on the ship, regardless of background, took biosecurity seriously to prevent introducing diseases such as avian influenza. We made sure that only our boots touched the ground, carefully cleaned and disinfected them between landings, and avoided unnecessary contact with wildlife or the environment. Following these procedures highlighted how even small individual actions are critical to protecting fragile ecosystems and respecting international guidelines.
The lectures provided by expedition leaders and researchers on the ship further reinforced these lessons. The lectures covered Antarctic ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental pressures, giving context to the precautions we took on land and helping me understand how interconnected human activity, environmental stewardship, and global systems truly are. Watching everyone engage with these sessions regardless of their background emphasized that protecting shared spaces requires curiosity, awareness, and collective responsibility.
Experiencing Antarctica in this way highlighted how global challenges, such as climate change and ecosystem management, depend on cooperation across borders and disciplines. My time on the ship showed me that Antarctica is not isolated; it is part of a broader global system, and the responsibility for its protection is shared by all who engage with it. This experience reinforced the importance of accountability, collaboration, and careful stewardship in both environmental and business contexts.
