My name is Jedi Jones, and I am a Texas A&M Masters of Finance student currently studying abroad in Auckland, New Zealand. While I have only been here for three days, I feel that I have gained weeks of experience in the country. Though a young country (only settled by humans about 750 years ago), New Zealand has a rich culture, stemming from the native Māori people, Asian & Pacific peoples, and the British. The history between the Māori tribes and early English explorers is fascinating and strongly parallels the interactions the English explorers had with Native Americans on our own continent. The global business program has done an outstanding job at introducing us to this rich history from multiple perspectives. We heard from a New Zealand tour guide as well as the Māori people themselves (in addition to a recreation of one of their sacred tribal ceremonies).
While my time in New Zealand is nearly over, I am greatly looking forward to my remaining time in this beautiful country. Tonight, my cohort and I will venture throughout Auckland to be among the first people in the world to celebrate the new year. Tomorrow, we will travel to Hobbiton and experience more of New Zealand’s beauty, showcased via Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” filming location. Finally, we will embrace the warm sun at one of the country’s beaches before heading to Sydney, Australia.
So far, I have successfully learned about the history of New Zealand and appreciated the breathtaking national flora (as seen in the attached photos). During my remaining time, I hope to gain more insight into the daily life of the average New Zealander by interacting with them in restaurants, on the streets, and anywhere else where I can find an excuse to strike up a conversation. I am beyond grateful to Texas A&M for giving me the opportunity to have this once in a lifetime experience.
