Blog #1 – Tingyi Wang

2025, Antarctica, Antarctica Perspectives, Argentina, Faculty-led and Field Trip Programs / December 29, 2025 by Mays Abroad

Being in South America for the first time, I have nothing to complaint about Ushuaia. With help from AUIP’s well planned itinerary everything went smooth. Although the bus was shut midway back from the Beagle Channel, it was still a unique experience too. I enjoyed the two hikes with the squad; first outdoor activities together definitely brought us closer. Learning about how Chile and Argentina drew their boundaries on the Beagle Channel was interesting. Having an immersive tour in a very culture city is something I always do. People in Argentina are very welcoming even when English is not their first language. I’ve had two cashiers translated everything they’ve said on a phone when I couldn’t understand what they were saying to me. However, I did encounter a few shop owners charging me extra with a significantly low exchange rate that they did not specify anywhere in the shop. On the other hand, I appreciate the convenience of using US Dollar and US credit cards in the southernmost city in the world.

Beside the steakhouse we went before departure, food in Ushuaia is not quite impressive as I expected it to be. The fish of the day at one of the local restaurants was more expensive than in the U.S. but it was not seasoned, just a few lemons slice to squeeze on top. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the croissant and churros I have both at the hotel and on the street.

We had a city walk after the prime rib dinner and bought some souvenirs along the way before heading back to the hotel. Some prices were costlier than the U.S. which was quite surprising to me considering Argentina’s average income. Not just in the tourism-favored Ushuaia, but in Buenos Aires as well. Me and Parker had a long conversation back at the hotel, and we get to know each other for the first time.
