Just arriving in Milan, Italy, I immediately felt a wave of culture shock which was both intimidating and exhilarating. I could sense the countless opportunities awaiting me. The architecture alone left me in awe; everywhere I turned, I was surrounded by breathtaking buildings of ancient history. Seeing the Duomo in the heart of the city was especially stunning. It was such a striking contrast to what I’m used to seeing in College Station. One of the first things that fascinated me was how effortlessly stylish everyone looked. It’s common to see people dressed impeccably at 8 a.m., stopping briefly for an espresso before going on with their day. Another cultural tradition I’ve come to love is aperitivo (Italy’s version of happy hour) where people gather after a long day to enjoy drinks, small bites, and good conversation before dinner. Regardless of the weather, everyone seems to prefer being outdoors. I found it amusing that while people in the U.S. might wear light sweaters in 60°F weather, Italians bundle up in full winter gear even with a slight breeze. They also take great care in their appearance, it’s rare to see anyone outside without styled hair! As for the food, I’ve grown accustomed to meals centered around tomatoes, mozzarella, bread, and olive oil—and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The university I’m attending, Bocconi University, has exceeded all my expectations. It’s known as one of the best universities in Italy, and I can truly see why. The courses are challenging and the diversity among my peers has allowed me to connect with people from all over the world. I’ve made friends from nearly every country in Europe, and it’s amazing to think that one day I’ll be able to visit them across the world. Milan itself is a city of fashion and creativity, and being here (especially during Milan Fashion Week) has inspired me to develop a stronger sense of personal style. Overall, this experience has already given me so much: meaningful international friendships, new perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for the world around me. I look forward to continuing to learn, grow, and make the most of every day in this incredible city.
