My time in Italy was truly one of the most amazing experiences of my life, from the culture and breathtaking views to the valuable business experience I gained. During the program, we were divided into teams and partnered with a local client to consult on ways to improve their business. I quickly discovered that conducting business in Italy is very different from what I’m used to in the United States.
One major difference is the emphasis Italians place on personal relationships in business. Unlike in America, where formal agreements and efficiency often take priority, Italian professionals value trust and connection before moving forward with decisions. Building that relationship with our client took time, but it was essential for productive collaboration. Additionally, I noticed that Italian business culture tends to be more cautious and resistant to rapid change. Negotiations were slow and deliberate, and our client was hesitant to adopt major shifts in his business model. For instance, he wasn’t interested in expanding beyond his local, tight-knit community. He preferred to keep the business small, sustainable, and community-focused. This stood in contrast to the typical American mindset, where growth and profit maximization are often the top priorities.
This experience abroad has significantly changed my perspective. Personally, I’ve grown much more confident. Navigating unfamiliar cities, airports, and public transportation helped me become more independent and adaptable, skills that will benefit me for years to come.
Culturally, my eyes were opened to how different daily life is in Italy. I gained a new appreciation for things I once took for granted, like air conditioning, ice, and quick restaurant service. Yet I also grew to love the slower, more communal dining experience in Italy. Meals felt like social events, not just something to rush through. While many of my initial impressions were accurate, I came to understand that there was so much more beneath the surface.
Overall, I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity. The lessons I learned, both personally and professionally, will stay with me forever.
