This trip in Strasbourg France has taught me the importance of valuing every interaction, prioritizing genuine learning and getting out of my comfort zone. First, every interaction in a foreign country is not just important to successfully achieve a goal but also can be a learning experience that you carry into the future. A culturally intelligent learner is someone who focuses on the little thing and adapts to culture as they experience it. I’ve learned how to listen and put time into understanding the true meaning behind the littlest things. Second, I have learned the value of genuine learning. My classes in France taught me not only business skills but also skills for interacting with a new culture, knowing the history/values and beliefs of a new area. I learned that the EU is a representation of a unified Europe and it helped me better understand the true feelings behind the decisions and policies of France and Europe. I believe that every American should learn about the EU because some of the lessons I learned showed me how to be a better person and American as a whole. Lastly, I found a great appreciation for getting out of my comfort zone. For any student looking to go on a CIBS study abroad, they must be ready to not only adapt to a new language but rather a whole way of life. Europe values family, whether it’s a two hour dinner or closing shops on Sundays. America is a fast paced, loud and efficient culture. Europe likes to take their time, be quiet and intentional and slow down things that aren’t too serious. Taking weekend trips to Zurich, Colmar and Paris I learned about the beauty of France and the convenience of travel throughout Europe. A two hour train can transport you to a unique area with unique culture and scenes. Overall, I’ve learned so much on my trip to Europe and would go on this trip again and again.
