Abroad in Europe – Avery Rodgers

2025, Austria, Europe Marketing, Faculty-led and Field Trip Programs, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom / June 9, 2025 by Mays Abroad

Within this past week, I got back to the United States from traveling all around Europe. During my 28 days abroad, I got to visit seven different European countries. We went to England, France, Monaco, Italy, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. While traveling through these different countries, I got to visit many different companies and interview people local to the specific city I was in. I got to see the difference between how companies market their products to customers in their own country and other countries. For example, Design Bridge and Partners was a marketing company we visited in London that used concepts and ideas relevant to the area to form ads. There was a rising epidemic of prostate cancer in the UK, so they partnered with a company that sold kiwis to create a commercial that spread awareness about the issue but also marketed their product. Also, a lot of the advertising we saw used in Europe was more open to talking about sexuality and bold topics whereas those are more taboo topics in American media. On behalf of the people themselves, there were definitely more hospitable people than I originally thought there was going to be. Most people were very open to having a conversation and being asked about their opinions on a variety of topics. People in Europe take a lot of pride in the country that they were raised in, but they also have a lot of good things to say about the people and culture of the United States. There was not really a language barrier throughout the continent because most children grow up speaking multiple languages, including English. Although we did our best to greet people in their native language, people were very understanding and spoke to us in English. Overall, this trip was a once in a lifetime experience, and I am so thankful to have a new perspective on business in European countries.
