Looking back on the past two weeks, it’s hard to believe how much has changed quickly. I remember writing my first reflection full of excitement and curiosity, and now, after actually living it, I can say the experience was even more impactful than I imagined.
One of the biggest takeaways was how much business is shaped by culture. In countries like Switzerland and Austria, professionalism is rooted in structure, precision, and trust. Everything is clean, quiet, on time, and built to last. Starting in those countries gave me the assumption that all other businesses in Europe performed along a similar structure. Over time, when we began to explore Italy and Slovenia, I noticed those countries focus more on relationships, passion, and appreciating their surroundings. Conversations are longer, decisions are more flexible, and there’s a stronger emphasis on people over processes.
As we toured businesses throughout several different countries, I’ve learned that being curious and respectful goes a long way. Listening more than you speak, being patient with communication styles, and being open to new ideas. It’s not just about adapting to others, it’s about learning from them.
Based on the first impression, I considered this trip to be solely focused on business and company culture. However, I’ve now learned there is a lot more tied in studying abroad. For example, I’ve grown a lot on a personal level. Traveling with a group of students I didn’t know well at first, navigating unfamiliar cities, and constantly adjusting plans helped me become more adaptable and independent. I learned how to be okay with uncertainty, how to stay grounded even when things don’t go exactly how I pictured them, and how to connect with people in more intentional ways.
Reflecting on my experience through time abroad, I’ve noticed that my initial impressions were not as accurate as I thought. I didn’t expect how much personal growth would come from just observing, listening, and adjusting. I feel more confident navigating new spaces, more comfortable asking questions, and more aware of how connected the world is.
