Bonjour!
I’m currently studying abroad in Strasbourg, France, and it’s been such a cool experience so far, especially since it’s my first time being abroad. When I first got here, I was a little surprised by the business school. It’s really different from Mays! The overall atmosphere reminds me a lot of high school. There are fewer students, and it feels like a smaller, close-knit community.
Strasbourg itself is even more beautiful than I imagined. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Cities in the U.S. are so modern and urban, but here, the buildings and architecture really reflect the history and culture. It honestly feels like I’m walking through the past, and I love that there is so much to learn about everywhere around me.
Life here is definitely different from what I’m used to in College Station. Everything is very walkable, and I’ve had to get used to relying on public transportation, like the tram and buses, instead of just hopping in my car for class. I’ve learned to give myself extra time to get to school, which is an adjustment.
Another small but interesting difference: people here don’t smile at strangers. Instead, it’s normal to just say “bonjour” when you pass someone. It’s little cultural things like that that I’m starting to notice more and more.
One of the biggest reasons I wanted to do this program was to learn more about different cultures—and I definitely feel like I’m starting to. Strasbourg has both French and German influences, which makes it a really unique place to study. I also plan to travel on the weekends so I can experience even more cultures, try new foods, and just learn more and more about new places.
Overall, I’m super grateful for this opportunity. I really want to grow as a person and come back with a better understanding of the world around me. This has already been such a meaningful experience, and I’m excited to see what else is ahead.
