As I look back on my study abroad experience through Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy, I realize how much I’ve learned—academically, culturally, and professionally. What started as lectures in a classroom quickly turned into life-changing lessons and experiences that I’ll carry with me forever.
One of my biggest takeaways was noticing how different the lifestyle is compared to the United States. Life abroad felt more laid-back and centered around personal relationships. It’s common for people to meet up with loved ones daily over coffee or a meal. This emphasis on connection extended into the workplace as well. Whether we visited a local violin shop or a corporate office, I saw how passionate Europeans are about their work—and how workplace structure and punctuality are often more relaxed than in the U.S.
This experience also changed my perspective on international business. Not only did I expand my understanding of how business is conducted globally, but I also discovered a strong desire to work internationally in the future. I realized that opportunities abroad are truly limitless and that there’s always more to learn. I also gained a deeper appreciation for cultural awareness and adaptability. Learning to understand local customs, read between the lines, and respect different ways of thinking is essential in international business. My time abroad has completely changed how I listen, communicate, and build professional relationships.
Looking back, my initial impressions were largely accurate. Each country was beautiful in its own unique way—whether through mountains, coastlines, architecture, or rich cultural traditions. The work environments didn’t vary drastically from country to country; the common thread was a tranquil, low-stress atmosphere.
My first study abroad experience was nothing short of life-changing. I came home having learned so much, broadened my perspective, and met so many incredible people. If you’re even considering studying abroad—do it. You won’t regret it.
