Touching down in Athens, I was immediately filled with anticipation and curiosity, eager to begin exploring the city and learning about life in Greece. From my first impressions, Athens seems like a place that thrives on energy and celebration. It reminds me a bit of New York City, but with a slower pace, more greenery, and the added charm of ancient ruins and classical art woven into everyday life.
Walking through the city has been one of the highlights of my experience. Everything is so accessible by foot, and I often catch glimpses of the Acropolis in the distance, acting almost like a compass guiding me through the streets. The blend of modern life with centuries-old architecture creates a unique atmosphere that feels both timeless and dynamic.
The people of Athens have been incredibly warm and welcoming, especially toward visitors. Thanks to our partnership with Global Business Brigades Kambia, we’ve had the chance to connect with locals in meaningful ways—whether through conversations, trying traditional Greek dishes, or learning about daily life from those who live it. These experiences have offered a richer understanding of the culture than I could ever gain from a textbook or classroom.
One particularly impactful moment came when I interacted with locals who didn’t speak English. Though we faced a language barrier, we managed to communicate through gestures, facial expressions, and shared understanding. That experience taught me that genuine human connection often goes beyond words.
This journey has also deepened my awareness of global economic disparities. Greece’s recovery from the 2008 economic crisis is still ongoing, and it’s clear that small business owners and migrant communities face significant challenges. Tourism plays a major role in the economy here, and it’s apparent in the many businesses tailored to tourists.
Overall, this experience I hope will broaden my global perspective, helping me appreciate cultural diversity and the resilience of communities. I’ve learned not only about Greek society but also about myself and how to navigate new environments with empathy and openness.
