As my time here in Madrid comes to an end, I’ve been able to reflect on the ways that this experience has changed my perspective. Moving to a new country can be daunting, but I would recommend it to anyone. There is so much to be learned from living in a different culture. There are different types of food, music, entertainment, and traditions. I’ve fallen in love with so many of the various aspects of Spanish culture.
One of the major ways my perspective has changed is my love for diversity. There is something so beautiful and exciting about being surrounded by people from so many different countries, backgrounds, and beliefs. My knowledge of world cultures, politics, and society has grown as I’ve had conversations with friends from all over the world.
Another way my perspective has changed is my view on the speed at which we live. In America, it often feels like life is nonstop. We live in a highly individualistic society that prioritizes success, achievement, and making things happen for yourself. In a lot of ways, this is beneficial for innovation and productivity. However, living in Spain has shown me the importance of slowing down. Life is slower here, just due to the nature of the culture. There is an emphasis on doing things at a slower pace through having a siesta, eating at a slower pace, walking slowly, etc. I’ve realized how much I am pulled into the rush and hurry of American life and I want to bring the slowness of Spain back home with me.
This experience has enriched me in ways I never anticipated. Beyond academics and travel, it has deepened my sense of independence, adaptability, and curiosity. Navigating a new city, learning to communicate across language barriers, and embracing unfamiliar customs have all pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me grow. I’ve become more confident in my ability to handle uncertainty and more open to new experiences. Living abroad has taught me that growth often comes from discomfort, and that the world is full of perspectives waiting to be understood. I return home not just with memories, but with a more global mindset and a renewed sense of who I am.
Studying in Spain has been interesting, challenging, and eye opening. I am incredibly grateful to have had this opportunity and I hope to return back to Europe at some point in the future! Hasta luego, Madrid!
