If I had to describe my first week abroad in one word, it would be surreal. From the mountains of Switzerland to currently being on the coastline of Croatia, every place has felt like a postcard. I still can’t believe I get to be here. Getting to be here with 40 other students has made me have a much better time than if I were just here by myself or with my family. I’ve not only been impacted by the differing cultures here, but also by these friends that I’ve made.
One of the biggest things I’ve noticed is how different the pace of life feels in Europe. In Switzerland and Austria, everything is so efficient and clean, it has a different vibe than the cities I’m used to in the US. It’s made me try to slow down and enjoy the moment rather than always be focused on the next thing to achieve. On the other hand, places like Slovenia and Italy are more relaxed and people-focused. Everyone takes their time, whether it’s a meal, a conversation, or walking around.
Going back to the people, I’ve already met some amazing ones on this trip. Even though we all came in with totally different backgrounds and personalities, something about traveling together just makes it so easy to connect. Whether we’re exploring new cities, bonding over bus ride chaos and the tour guides’ shenanigans, or laughing until we cry at dinner, I already feel like I’ve made friendships that will last way beyond this program.
Through this experience, I want to grow both professionally and personally. I hope to become more confident in new environments, more thoughtful in the way I approach global business, and more present in the little moments. If the first week is anything to go by, this summer is going to be something I’ll never forget, and something that I believe will be a highlight of my college experience.
