This summer, 2025, I am staying in Strasbourg, France, with CIBS. Strasbourg is a uniquely fascinating city for several reasons: the strong syncretism of German and French culture, the distinctive educational structure, and the vast interactions and experiences found throughout the town. Due to its close proximity to the German border and its history of alternating between French and German rule the cultural blend is visible in nearly every aspect of daily life. For example, the massive cathedral at the center of town showcases striking German Gothic architectural features, while the many local bakeries reflect a deep French culinary tradition. Strasbourg embodies a cultural duality that makes each building, bakery and bathroom you walk into so different. Furthermore, the program I am studying with has placed us in a converted school building shared with many other European students. From the moment you enter, it’s clear that the students take pride in fostering a creative and relaxing environment. Whether it’s the café downstairs, the spacious cafeteria, or the game room, there are plenty of ways for students to unwind and find balance amid the demands of school life. The breaks from our 5 hour work day are so rewarding when you experience the culture throughout the entire school. Not only does the school feel friendly and comfortable, but so does the inviting atmosphere of nearly every restaurant or store you walk into. A simple “bonjour” has become an essential first word that sets the tone for positive and respectful interactions. While many locals speak a basic level of English, starting a conversation with “bonjour” creates a foundation and shows appreciation for the culture, making every exchange feel more welcoming. Throughout this experience in the coming weeks, I hope to grow in several key areas. First, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of life within the European Union. As a foundational force in global economics and culture, I believe the EU plays a central role in shaping the future. Second, I want to expand my cultural awareness and intelligence. This includes learning common French words and phrases, recognizing appropriate moments to speak or listen, and gaining insight into what a typical day looks like for a local in Strasbourg. Finally, I hope to absorb valuable knowledge from the courses offered in this program. Knowledge I can apply to the business world. In an increasingly interconnected global market, it’s essential to understand, experience, and actively work toward becoming a more informed and capable global citizen.
