Bonjour!
This past week has been full of exciting memories and learning. I never thought I would have the opportunity to live somewhere outside of Texas, and in a foreign country no less! Strasbourg, France is a city full of rich culture, kind people, and fun adventures.
The first thing I noticed was that the city was huge! I didn’t realize how developed the area was, especially because it looks small and quaint from the outside looking in. From interacting with locals at patisseries and observing them with their friends and families, I’ve been able to see just how proud the people are of their culture. Strasbourg’s history is rich, evident through its architecture, roman ruins, and even the little stork figures spotted on streets. Getting to interact with other international students and Mays students and professors has been a wonderful experience. I’m able to meet so many people, all from different backgrounds. I’ve gotten to share what America is like, and hear from Strasbourg locals what they love about living here. Being able to challenge myself through this trip has been incredibly fun. Their culture is impactful on its people, and that quality is evident in the pride resonating throughout the people of Strasbourg.
One of my favorite things about Strasbourg that’s different from America is its slow way of life. The people aren’t in a hurry to get anywhere (which is indicated by the two hour long meals)! They take their time ordering a chocolate croissant and coffee, sitting down outside, rather than taking breakfast to go and scrambling to work. Time is precious to the locals, and I admire that. I want to eliminate the sense of hurry I feel as an American in my everyday life. Studying abroad in Strasbourg has taught me to enjoy the small things and take it all in. I’m only here for a month– I’m excited to make the very most of it!
