Howdy from Strasbourg!
The most rewarding experience I have encountered while abroad has been learning so much about other cultures and my own at the same time. Many people focus on how we differ from Europeans, but I feel the contrary. Each thing we have experienced may be slightly different than our norm, but is the same as what we do at the core. I have taken these weeks as a way to reflect on how our cultures are similar, what we have in common, and what we can learn from each other.
A few things I have noticed about French business are the ways they communicate, the work-life balance, and their relationships. French tend to communicate very directly and want to get to the point. The work-life balance in France seems to be very important. They are able to take more time after work to be with family and friends. The French tend to take their time, especially in meals, to enjoy their company. Business relationships in France are more likely to be trustworthy and stronger-built throughout time.
The biggest surprise I have had so far in France has been how many people have asked us about our political beliefs and our country. I honestly do not think much about politics unless I am reading something specific, but more times than not, people have expressed their questions and concerns for the US. I know that our country is divided and always going through changes, but I would not have thought that random people would ask what I think about certain beliefs.
Overall, being in France has been an amazing experience, and one I will never forget!
