After just one week abroad, my initial impression of the global business program is that it is far more than I had even anticipated, which is saying a lot, considering I came in with high expectations. The itinerary, cultural exposure, and company visits are already exceeding what I imagined. I feel like I have already learned and experienced so much in such a short time, both personally and culturally.
Being in London has been incredible. The city is filled with history, culture, and energy, and it’s been amazing to explore such iconic places. Visiting sites like Oxford, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and the Tower of London has helped me better understand the historical and political foundations not only of the United Kingdom, but also of the United States since we stem from Britain. Standing in places that have shaped centuries of history was surreal and inspiring.
From this global experience, I hope to gain a more international perspective on business, culture, and life in general. I want to become more globally aware and adaptable, both personally and professionally. I believe that being immersed in different environments, especially with a business focus, will challenge me to think differently and broaden my understanding of how people across the world live and work.
One of the most noticeable differences between London and the U.S. is the way people move through the city. Public transportation is widely used and incredibly efficient, and walking is the norm. Another immediate difference is that cars drive on the opposite side of the road, which was confusing at first, especially when crossing the street. I’ve also learned that tipping isn’t customary here, unlike in the U.S., which has helped me rethink assumptions about hospitality norms.
I’m so excited for the rest of the trip and for all of the countries to come!
