Due to the fast nature of this program, the cultural shocks are sudden but fleeting. Since we started our time in New York City, it was fascinating to experience such a different culture within the same country. We traveled within the city, encountering many different types of people through different forms of communication. I truly enjoyed visiting the different firms and learning about high finance from the finance capital of the world. The differences between New York City and College Station simply boils down to the big city busyness. New York is always bustling with stress and excitement, while College Station is mellow and enriching. Furthermore, we traveled to London after a brief stop in The Big Apple. As this was my first time in Europe, I had no idea what to expect. To be honest, I kept looking right-left-right when crossing the street, when I had to do the opposite due to the driving nature in the UK. I was also fascinated by the interconnectedness of the public transportation system. Everything was very accessible and efficient. I was initially surprised by how different our languages were, even though we were all speaking English. Their accents and slang made it difficult to understand their words at times, proving it to be challenging at times. Nonetheless, I saw the British Parliament and Oxford within 24 hours of landing in London. Seeing their governmental and educational institutions filled me with awe. I was able to draw some parallels, but the differences are what made the experience that much more worth it. Of course, the company visits throughout London were very mentally enriching. I gained so much insight into asset management within the European markets and how it all connects on a global scale. I could not have asked for a better way to have learned this. The main differences between cultures is manners. The United Kingdom has a heavy presence of manners that I don’t see as much in the States. Everyone is very kind and ensures chivalry is being practiced. It honestly has made me more aware of my behavior and surroundings. I hope to continue to grow, both intellectually and professionally, throughout the remainder of this study abroad experience.
