As I have now made it back to the U.S., I will deeply miss Portugal as I had an amazing trip to Porto and Lisbon! Initially, I was nervous and worried about going to Portugal. I was really worried about the food and being able to speak to people there. I was also going on the trip with few people I knew, so I wasn’t sure how it would go. To my surprise, most people spoke English in the tourist cities, which was nice. The food ended up being amazing, which was also a nice surprise. There was also plenty of American food if you were worried. This trip definitely exceeded my expectations. Some of my favorite places we visited include the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, Castle of Guimarães, Santa Maria Maior, and Praça do Comércio. We visited multiple companies and got to see behind the scenes of their operations, focusing on the logistical side of each company. We got to see how corks were made at Laffite Cork Company, and we had a great wine tasting at Adega Belém. We got to watch the production of a high-valued shoe company called Mariano Shoes. We also got to try the infamous Pastel de Nata while listening to the co-founder of Nata Lisboa speak. We visited a port in Porto called Porto da Figueira da Foz, where we got to see supply chain operations all around us. We also got a tour of the ship, which was pretty cool. As this was my first time outside of the U.S., my study abroad experience has opened my eyes to what the world has to offer. I want to thank Dr. Koufteros and the rest of the faculty who guided us through this trip, and I look forward to traveling around the world in the future!
