Howdy! As a senior at Texas A&M University, this opportunity to participate in a study abroad program designed specifically for my major over winter break intrigued me. Participating in this global supply chain business program in Portugal marks a significant milestone for me; it’s my first exposure to Europe. Stepping into Lisbon and Porto has been both exciting and humbling. Lisbon’s historic charm, with its cobblestone streets, which are very slippery when wet, pastel-colored buildings, and rail lines all throughout the main streets, immediately captured my attention. The vibrant yet laid-back energy of the city feels distinct from the fast-paced lifestyle back home in the U.S., especially since I’m from the big city of Dallas, Texas. On the other hand, Porto, with its breathtaking views of the Douro River where we had the opportunity to travel by boat across, and intricate architecture, has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with Lisbon’s more modern, urban vibe.
The country, Portugal, as a whole has left a strong impression on me. The Portuguese people’s warmth and hospitality are apparent in every interaction, from friendly greetings to their willingness to take the time to welcome us into their place of business to learn more about their culture and traditions. The emphasis on leisurely meals and the slower pace of life are refreshing compared to the often hurried routines of American culture.
From this global experience, I hope to gain insights into supply chain management practices from a more global scale and a broader understanding of how cultural and economic factors influence business operations. Visiting Portuguese companies will provide a valuable perspective on how international supply chains adapt to regional nuances, which is especially critical in today’s interconnected world.
Culturally, the differences between Portugal and the U.S. are both subtle and striking. While Americans prioritize efficiency and directness, the Portuguese value relationships and savor the moment. This contrast teaches me to appreciate a more balanced approach to life and work. I look forward to learning more as I continue this journey, both professionally and personally. Gig ‘em!
