The most important thing I have learned about myself during this study abroad experience is my open-mindedness to new cultures. Going into the program, I knew I would be experiencing a new culture and learning about the customs and traditions of a different community and country. I initially had this preconceived notion that we would find a way to “Americanize” our experience, not intentionally, but simply for our convenience. However, after spending time immersed in Spanish culture and genuinely enjoying and learning about it, we started adapting to their slow, leisurely pace of life and really focused on enjoying our time there.
I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the slower pace and more relaxed lifestyle, but it turned out to be incredibly relaxing and stress-free. The whole experience was a welcome break from our hard and strenuous classes, making the month much more enjoyable overall.
During our time in Barcelona, while waiting in line to watch the Euro final, we met a guy from England. He told us all about the history between the EU and England. He was super nice, and getting to know another country’s history and culture from a local perspective was great.
All in all, immersing myself in this different culture showed me how open I am to experiencing new things. The various experiences and ways I learned during my time in Spain made me more open-minded about lifestyles, beliefs, and values that differ from my own.
