After a seemingly quick first week in Barcelona, I already feel as if I’ve grown accustomed to the unique culture and lifestyle of Spain. Before coming here, I thought it would be similar to a beach town in America with lots of seafood and tourists. When coming here, I realized I was mistaken when I saw how similar it is to big cities in America at first glance. After continuing to learn more about their city and culture, I’ve noticed all the small differences that give this place an identity. One of the ideas I have enjoyed is the idea of the siesta, where after a long day of work they rest for a few hours before continuing with their day, allowing them to stay up much later in the night. While we have been nonstop moving without this luxury, I love the concept which would never happen in the States. It has also been super fun to see how so many other cultures have spread to Spain through globalization, like the fast-food restaurants and stores found throughout the city that blend in with the rest of the city. My favorite thing I have discovered though is how different public transportation is in Spain, making it very easy to traverse the city whether by train, trolly, or bus. These systems are very efficient and clean compared to my limited experiences with them in America, limiting the amount of pollution along with being able to walk/bike in most places. I’ve slowly begun to admire all the little differences that make Barcelona so special, and I’ve only scratched the surface.
