Reflecting on my discovery of Spain and Barcelona so far, it’s been an enlightening journey that has opened my understanding and appreciation of the country’s rich culture and the warmth of its people. Among the cultural shocks are the Spanish people’s warmth and friendliness as well as their concept of “personal space.” I’m also surprised to see more tourists than locals at the places we’ve visited so far. Additionally, many people speak English, and most places have English titles and menus which has helped many of my peers on this trip. The slower pace of life here is notable too—they eat dinner around 9-10 PM and take longer lunch breaks, with efforts in the process to shorten the average workweek. I’ve also noticed that walking and metro are the main transportation in this city which I should’ve prepared for, but the views of the streets and buildings are worth it.
First impressions of Barcelona were formed by its global reputation for beautiful architecture, vibrant street activity, and, of course, pickpocket warnings. I envisioned landmarks like La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, a romantic city with people who shared a deep love for their culture, and a heightened awareness of theft and other dangers in a big city outside of the United States. My perspectives were accurate regarding how people come together in public spaces, engage in conversations, and celebrate life, which is truly inspiring. The Gothic architecture also maintains tradition and history, making Barcelona unique.
My peer’s shared background and goals have provided a solid foundation for mutual support on this trip so far. Although some of us started off homesick, the adaptation to our schedules and the comfort of all of us being in the same boat have helped in a new environment. We are all blown away by the culture of Spain and its beautiful streets. We all want to keep exploring together while also learning about our own individual independence away from home. I love the Aggie community this trip has brought to me so far, and it’s exciting to engage with and understand Spain’s culture together!
