During my time in this study abroad program, I have witnessed various aspects of business and globalization firsthand. Every day, I learn more about understanding global business. From encountering shops and stores also found in the United States to visiting fast-food restaurants with different menu items, it has become evident how extensive the business world has grown over the years. I had always heard that McDonald’s has a different menu depending on the location, and I decided to verify this claim. It turned out to be true! Upon entering a McDonald’s in Spain, I could only order from a kiosk, which displayed all the menu items. Interestingly, I found spicy chicken nuggets, potato wedge fries, biscoff McFlurry’s, a variety of dipping sauces, and even beer on the menu, which starkly contrasted with the menu in the United States. This experience made me realize the significant impact of geographic regions on businesses and their target markets.
My main goals during this study abroad program were to pass my scheduled courses and fully immerse myself in Spanish culture to experience life as a Spaniard for a month. I have savored plenty of Spanish cuisine, admired renowned buildings and architectural marvels, enjoyed Flamenco dances, and witnessed a bit of football culture by watching the 2024 European Championship in Catalunya. The people of Spain are passionate and value intimate gatherings. For instance, it is culturally acceptable (if not expected) to spend hours dining and conversing with company in a restaurant. Immersing myself in a different culture for a month has been an eye-opening and rewarding experience, providing insight into the distinct nature of Spanish culture compared to that of the United States.
