In just four weeks, Dubrovnik, Croatia, transitioned from a simple Google search to now a city I cherish and one filled with memories and unforgettable experiences. I am beyond grateful for the unique educational and cultural experience. I learned much about the differences in conducting business abroad and the general culture of Croatia. Regarding business, the Croatian business world is not as developed as in the United States so it causes them to value things differently than in the United States. For example, I noticed that in Croatia life outside of work is often much more important to individuals than life at work. Additionally, individuals are not as intrinsically motivated and competitive in school and work environments as in the United States. However, these differences are also valuable and I was able to learn from and appreciate them. These cultural differences taught me the value of a healthy work life balance and how to enjoy life’s little moments rather than always being hyper fixated on the task at hand. Initially, I noticed the slower pace of the culture and this very much so proved to be true. At first it annoyed me but now, I appreciate it as it has forced me to slow down, be present, and soak everything in. Also, the poor customer service bothered me at the beginning, yet I came to notice that this was not always the case. Befriending and building genuine connections with waiters was huge in increasing service quality, yet we did still have to be sure to voice our needs. The diverse experiences this past month have enhanced my self-assurance and self-awareness, giving me a greater appreciation for the world. This earth is so much more than me and my small circle. It is filled with vast beauties, incredible cultures, delicious foods, and wonderful people. I am leaving this study abroad feeling blessed and grateful for the world I get to live in. This trip has expanded my worldview, preparing me for a globalized business environment and taught me how to better respect and interact with various cultures. Dubrovnik will continue to influence me, and this month will remain a pivotal chapter in my journey of personal growth.
