As a student from Texas, studying in Barcelona, Spain it has already been an eye-opening experience from the moment I arrived. So far the program is great, the professors are incredibly knowledgeable, and are already very encouraging in challenging us by expanding our understanding of international business and business law. The lectures integrate practical, real-world applications, which helps with actually learning rather than short term memorizing.
Barcelona has a very vibrant, rich culture and architecture that I know I won’t see anywhere else in the world. The historic charm from the buildings and art, blended with modernity in Barcelona is truly like no other city I have visited. I am a huge fan of the Gaudi architecture, lively markets like La Boqueria, and the beaches which create an environment that is inspiring to learn about. In comparison growing up in Dallas, and visiting bigger US cities like New York, LA, Chicago, all which have their own culture however the style of architecture is much more modern, and sleek reflecting contemporary styles.
Another difference I have experienced is that the Spanish have a more relaxed approach, with a strong emphasis on work-life balance. For example, siestas, long lunch breaks, late dinners and the emphasis on family time in contrast to the often fast-paced and work-centric culture in the U.S. Additionally, I have noticed that little things like A/C, free ice water, and free public restrooms are uncommon here!
Overall, through this global experience of living abroad, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of international markets, specifically Spain’s, refine my communication skills in Spanish, and develop a global mindset which will be invaluable in my future career. I hope to grow as an individual and scholar, create friendships with new people, and learn from them and their backgrounds. By immersing myself in a different cultural and business environment will both broaden my horizons but also force myself to become more adaptable, confident, and open-minded. Ultimately, this experience will equip me with the skills and new perspectives I need to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
