So far only about a week into this journey I have loved getting to explore the city of Barcelona. I knew it had a very vibrant, rich culture and styles of architecture that I know I won’t see anywhere else in the world, but seeing it in person is breathtaking. The historic charm from the buildings and art, blended with modernity in Barcelona is truly like no other city I have visited. I am a huge fan of the Gaudi architecture, lively markets like La Boqueria, and Cathedrals, they are all so fascinating to learn about. In comparison to Spain, my experiences growing up in Dallas, and visiting bigger U.S. cities like New York, LA, Chicago, they all have their own similar culture. The style of architecture is much more modern and sleek, reflecting contemporary styles. In short, I sort of knew what environment I was getting into coming here however it was still a bit of a culture shock.
A cultural difference I have experienced is that the Spanish have a more relaxed approach, with a strong emphasis on work-life balance. For example, siestas, long lunch breaks, late dinners and the emphasis on family time in contrast to the often fast-paced and work-centric culture in the U.S. Additionally, I have noticed that little things like A/C, free ice water, and free public restrooms can be uncommon here!
Overall, as a group of 30+ students we have really enjoyed our time here. We get the opportunity after class to go on scavenger hunts, go to the beach, and try the different foods Barcelona has to offer. It’s been a great bonding experience and we have already found opportunities to sing the Aggie War hymn together. Knowing I have a piece of home with me is very comforting! Looking forward to the next few weeks.
