I learned that Global Leadership doesn’t mean you are the fancy, hot shot, business professional leading a speech in front of a large crowd. Global Leadership can be shown in the tiniest towns, in their small common meeting area, enjoying a meal with the people. Global leadership stems from resilience and empathy, not just your ability to lead others. A global leader focuses on being understood but also focuses on understanding others. Professor McFarland himself has shown us in more ways than one that he is an excellent leader. Not only does he have the drive and the hard skills, but he has resilience that can move mountains and a kind gratitude that has touched the hearts of many. He has shown us the importance of thinking outside of ourselves and more about the world around us. He taught us the importance of taking the extra two seconds to not judge, but just to try to understand; and this is all what global leadership is about.
