As I stepped off the train and into Paris, I was filled with a sense of excitement for the journey ahead. My first week in Strasbourg has been nothing short of incredible. From the moment I arrived, I knew that this would be the experience of a lifetime. Strasbourg has already exceeded my expectations. Our first few lectures in International Finance have been very interesting. They add an international perspective to investments. I am particularly excited about the upcoming visits to local businesses and institutions. Simply exploring the city has been fantastic as well.
One highlight of the week was our visit to the European Parliament, where we participated in a role-playing exercise. This experience allowed us to step into the shoes of European lawmakers, debating and negotiating on current issues. It was a unique opportunity to understand international policy-making and see how decisions are made at an international level. This activity helped me to understand European Politics which I previously had no knowledge of.
Strasbourg itself is a city that beautifully blends cultures. Throughout history, Strasbourg has been swapped back and forth by the Germans and the French. This contributes to a beautiful variety of architecture and diversity of people. The Cathedral is absolutely breathtaking. It never gets old walking around the corner to see it. A canal surrounds the central part of the city, and it is incredible as well.
One of the most prevalent differences between France and the U.S. is the pace of life. In Strasbourg, there is an emphasis on work-life balance. Lunchtimes are leisurely, and people seem to truly savor their meals, coffee, and breaks. This is a strong contrast to life in most U.S. cities where people are often rushed, constantly getting takeaway meals and coffee.
Another difference is the emphasis on public transportation and walking. Strasbourg’s tram system is fantastic, and it is very walkable. There are also bike lanes throughout the city. In comparison, many U.S. cities are heavily car-dependent, which leads to traffic and less physical activity.
Through this global experience, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of international business practices and cultures. I am eager to build a network of global connections. Additionally, I look forward to becoming more adaptable and open-minded, qualities that are essential in today’s world. In conclusion, my first week in Strasbourg has been an eye-opening introduction to the possibilities that lie ahead. As I continue to immerse myself in the program and the city, I am excited about the personal and professional growth that will undoubtedly come from this adventure.
