From the moment we touched down in Malta, I was immediately struck by the island’s unique blend of historical richness and modern vibrancy. The architecture, with its mix of ancient fortresses and contemporary buildings, reflects the island’s storied past and forward-looking attitude. Like with all the places we have visited so far, you could tell life has never stopped.
Transitioning to Sicily, the atmosphere is equally captivating. I was enchanted by their stunning coastlines, historical sites, and vibrant local culture. These cities highlight the strong sense of community and tradition that defines Sicilian life.
From this global experience, I mainly aim to further develop my global mindset, enhancing my ability to think critically and act strategically in diverse cultural contexts and to better understand and enjoy the cultures and languages of the place we visit.
One of the most striking differences between the host countries and the U.S. is the pace of life. In Malta and Sicily, there is a noticeable emphasis on work-life balance. Business hours often accommodate long lunch breaks, and there is a strong cultural emphasis on family and leisure time. This contrasts with the often fast-paced, work-centric culture in the U.S., where long working hours and a focus on productivity are more common.
Another significant difference is the value placed on tradition and local heritage. There is a deep respect for historical customs and practices, evident in their festivals, culinary traditions, and even business operations. In contrast, the U.S. tends to prioritize innovation and change, with a focus on the new and the cutting-edge.
Overall, these cultural differences provide a rich learning environment that I am eager to further explore.
