After an incredible two weeks abroad, I’ve returned home to the States with a newfound appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures I encountered in Malta, Sicily, and Italy. Each country offered a unique blend of history, people, and cuisine, enriching my understanding of global interactions both personally and professionally.
One of the most enjoyable differences was the leisurely pace of life, a refreshing contrast to the hustle of American society. The tradition of later meals with savory dishes and lively conversation became a pleasurable part of my daily routine. The abundance of individual restaurants, particularly in Rome, stood out against the chain-dominated dining landscape back home.
Navigating language barriers was both exciting and challenging. Communicating in my limited Italian added an element of adventure, with charades becoming a necessary skill at times. My attempts in Italian were well-received by locals, enhancing my interactions and deepening cultural connections. The biggest challenge was in business affairs where clear communication was needed, such as during a visit to an avocado farm where our guide translated for us.
A significant difference was tourism, especially in Rome, which brought crowds, traffic, and pickpockets, so being mindful of our belongings was a must!
My time abroad deepened my appreciation for the Mediterranean’s diverse cultures and history. The historical influences of Greek, Roman, Arabic, and other rulers have shaped the unique cultures and landscapes of Malta, Sicily, and Italy. Such as Arabic influences on Malta’s language and architecture, Spain’s baroque influence on Sicily’s architecture, and Byzantine mosaics in Italy are evident everywhere.
In conclusion, my time abroad has been transformative, enhancing my global perspective and enriching my understanding of the history, culture, and business practices of these regions. The amazing food, wonderful people, and rich history have made this experience unforgettable.
Until next time, arrivederci!
